The last workshop that I taught here at my studio was titled "Let's draw elephants" and what a wonderful subject they are for graphite! With my travels to Africa, I had plenty of reference photos to choose from. We began by discussing their anatomy, in particular their skull shape and trunks, then I did a quick demonstration in charcoal and encouraged a few quick sketches in this medium to get the feel of the elephant's structure. Some participants explored using charcoal for the first time and loved it, one lady continued to use it and did some fabulous work. I was so impressed by everyone's efforts and the resulting work was amazing... well done to all, another wonderful weekend of art and friendship!
