On Safari in Zimbabwe

October 6, 2015

Being a child of Africa, I have been truly marked by this beautiful continent and I am drawn back there time and again. I know Africa gets a bit of bad press but it has some remarkable qualities, you just have to know where to find them. Although I have been to Zimbabwe before, I had not been on safari there, so it was all a new adventure. Contrary to common belief, Zimbabwe is super safe and the local people are so friendly and polite. My daughter and I spent 10 days on safari, visiting 3 camps for 3 nights each. I used Wilderness Safaris as they are top in the ecotourism field and their camps are consistent in their efficiency and quality and the food is superb and again we were not disappointed. Our first stop was Camp Amalinda, 45 kms from Bulawayo and set in the stunning backdrop of rock formations in the Matobo Hills. Our second camp was Davison's in Hwange National Park, a tented camp set on a permanent waterhole where wildlife wanders in at all times... elephant heaven! I was able to get a bit of sketching done during camp siesta time with endless subject matter just wandering past. Our third camp was in the northern part of the country at Mana Pools, the camp set on the banks of the Zambezi River, a mecca for hippo and water birds including the seasonal carmine bee-eaters. A boat ride down the river, the beautiful blood moon and a night under the stars capped off an amazing adventure.
