Painting horses

December 23, 2016

Painting horses is amongst one of my favourite things to do especially when it's on a large scale as this painting is at 36" x 48". I was delighted to have been commissioned for this piece, the only requirement was "running horses in grass". I used a fairly limited palette so that I kept a harmony through the horses even though they were different colours. Following below is a few work in progress pictures of the process. I begin with an undercoat, then do a second layer where I refine the values, colour and anatomy and then the background goes on.

 First layer of paint.

Second layer of paint adds depth and form.
