Light and Shade Workshop

Last weekend I held one of my monthly workshops in my studio with the medium of choice being oil paint and the theme being Light and Shade. After an introductory talk along with some sketches for demonstration purposes, I set up a lamp, shadow box and some objects to show the effects of light and shade. With two beginners in the class, our first subject was a pear on a red surface... a great and relatively easy fruit to paint. From there we moved to birds and animals, maintaining a limited palette and working on small canvases. I was thrilled with everyone's efforts, especially one student who was only 15. His focus and commitment was a credit to him, he did very well indeed.

The images below are preparing gesso boards by being cut to size, and some of the work done on Saturday and Sunday all lined up on the drying shelf.
